The New Rugs

If you read my previous post then you know I've had some trouble buying new rugs. I went back to the dealer on Monday and held my ground, insisting on an even exchange with something that was better quality. The shopkeeper said everyone knows that you don't vacuum that kind of carpeting, that you have to use a stiff brush and after one week pieces will stop falling out. I said, No, obviously not everyone knows that. You should have told me that before I bought it. If the carpeting is that great you should no problem reselling it to someone else. And I have a baby, I can't have pieces of carpet falling out for one week. One weekend was too long. She's eating the pieces and they're stuck all over her clothes. We went back and forth like that for awhile. Finally he showed me some other rugs that were comparable in price. But much smaller. He unrolled everything in the shop and then had a guy take me down the block to the warehouse. I eventually settled on two that I could live with.

So we now have two small blue Oriental rugs, being covered with spit up and cat fur regularly.

Out with the old.

Back in with the old.

In with the new.

That looks like a size you can take out and beat on a regular basis, which is good - it has been thought that rugs harbor some type of bacteria that is bad for babies' lungs. (Well, probably everyone's lungs, but babies are right down there all the time.) I recall hearing a few years ago that having rugs when one was a baby was linked to asthma, later on. Also, weirdly, I happened to read a long article written in Victorian times about the sort of child care available to most working class mothers, and the writer noted that in the homes of slack 'child minders,' where the rugs were dirty, children did not thrive. (Among other horrors, like they were being kept asleep all the time with opiates and fed nothing with any food value.) Even then they recommended mostly easily cleanable wooden floors for babies. They do have their own built in knee pads. :)

I think the new blue one is actually cuter :)

I just have a weakness for dark red rugs like your old one although you new one is nice.

I've only just found your blog, looking in a search for Bike Hod. I'm going to make you very jealous now as I wanted one - almost £300 too much but a friend said she knew someone who didn't use theirs. I have got a very old one, solid tyres, minus a bag, so am now trying to think of what to put on it to put shopping in.
