After All That, I Didn't Run

That’s right. I didn’t run the half marathon. I developed an infection that had me in bed for a few days this week. Between the symptoms of the infection and the side effects of the antibiotics I was not a happy camper. And I was nowhere near optimal health and training condition. So I decided not to run. Running while being a little less than perfectly conditioned didn’t seem so bad, but running while being exhausted before I even started the race seemed like a stupid thing to attempt. If this were the only half marathon available to me, I might have done it anyway. But with another one coming up in a month I have time to get healthy and get back on track. Mike lost a whole month of training due to illness, so he didn’t run either. We are a little sad that germs brought us down.

How frustrating. But it was a good decision. You need to recuperate for next time!

I have had bad luck with early spring races. I've signed up for various March/April races here in DC (Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, National Half Marathon) over the years and three or four times I've had to sit out one or both due to an injury or a long illness that waylaid my training. It's annoying, but it's better to get the rest you need and recover rather than prolong (or perhaps worsen) whatever condition you have.

I had the same thing happen to me right after my freshman year of college. I trained for a marathon, did a ton of miles and then got the "post finals flu." The race ran right under my bedroom window. Ugh, what a horrendous feeling to hear all of the people running by while I laid in bed. The worst part was that I was better enough to feel guilty about not running but not so well that I could fathom having run even the half. Glad to hear you have another race coming up so soon though! I'm sure you'll be healthy for the next one!

It was a tough course so I am convinced that you made the right choice. The weather was cool, even had rain, but the majority of the runners were struggling as they reached my aid station. I was at the 10 km after the hill climbing of Banjara and Jubilee Hills. We went thru some Gatorade, bananas and muscle spray yesterday! Looking forward to doing our next half training together!

That stinks. I'm sorry. Think you made the right call though. I'm glad you have another race coming soon. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!

Kim, I was pretty happy to be inside drinking coffee when it started raining! The weather was perfectly cool for a run, though.

Argh, I wrote something that got lost and now I can't seem to come up with the words again. I'll try...

It's frustrating to get derailed so close to your goal, but you have already accomplished a lot, keeping yourself in shape and running in a place where many women might be intimidated to do so. Sometimes it's the trip, not the destination.
